Publishers' Session: Texts and Tests from OUP and Pearson Kirihara

Saturday, December 11th, 2010, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Keiko Willhite (Oxford University Press); Takeshi Kamimura (ELT/VERSANT Consultant, Pearson Kirihara)

For Nagasaki JALT's eighth and final meeting of 2010, they are very happy to invite representatives from two different publishers. Admission is free for all for this semi-commercial meeting.

In the first half of Willhite's presentation, she will introduce the second edition of "American Headway." The second edition combines 80 per cent new material with the methodology that has made American Headway the world's most trusted English course. Together, we will look at the new online digital resources that will make life easier for the teacher and give students hours of extra practice.

The second half of her presentation will focus on Graded Readers and how teachers and schools can start their own Extensive Reading Program. There will be some activities to participate in during the presentation such as answering questions and experiencing some of the activities in the new material.

Next, Kamimura will explain about the Versant English Test, which automatically evaluates the spoken English skills of non-native English speakers, using speech processing technology and the advanced science of linguistics. The Versant English Test has been used by corporations, call centers/BPOs, government agencies, and academic institutions throughout the world to evaluate the spoken English skills of staff, officers, or students. This presentation will cover an overview of the Versant English Test with research from some major universities.

After the meeting, there is an optional post-meeting dinner party planned for Aletta restaurant, on the 4F of CocoWalk mall, Morimachi. The cost is Y2000 for all you can eat (sweets, food, soft drinks included) or Y1500 for all you can drink, or Y400-Y500 per drink.
