Current Perspectives on Pronunciation

This seminar will provide an overview of past trends in teaching pronunciation, from the days of the audiolingual method, when correct pronunciation was regarded as one of the most important elements in language acquisition, to more recent times, when the focus of language teaching has been on intonation, suprasegmentals, discourse structures, and information focus. We will also think a bit about likely directions for pronunciation teaching in the years to come.
The seminar will also touch on other current issues. Are there, or should there be, international standards for English pronunciation? Will computer technology assist – or replace – the pronunciation teacher some day? Does current linguistic theory and neurobiological research shed any light on the way sounds are processed and learned?
There will also be a practical focus to the seminar. We will discuss the newest ideas in pronunciation teaching; explore ways that a teacher whose native language is not English can be a successful pronunciation teacher; discuss ways that a teacher can adapt published textbooks and teaching materials – especially materials approved by the Ministry of Education – to add a focus on pronunciation; and discuss the many practical problems connected with teaching and learning English pronunciation in Japan.
This is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public. To attend both days of the weekend seminar costs 10,500 yen for the general public (free for M.Ed. and Ed.D. alumni of Temple University Japan; 65,000 yen for credit towards an M.Ed. at Temple U.).
