The Gothic tradition still has a powerful influence on contemporary culture. This talk will first examine the British 18th century Gothic revival in art and architecture, and the birth of Gothic fiction. The second part will examine the historical context of John Polidori's and Mary Shelley's creation of two of the most enduring characters of the Gothic tradition: the vampire and Frankenstein's monster.
