Question Time

Sunday, July 11th, 2010, 2:00 PM - 4:50 PM

Speaker: Terry Yearley

Although teachers often ask questions to which they already know the answers, students usually do not. This workshop will introduce attendees to a fun and simple activity in which both yes/no and wh- questions can be practiced. It can be used with any text with which the students are familiar. Using cards, students work in pairs, changing partners and cards after each has asked their question. In the case of yes/no questions the student holding the card can see both the correct question and the appropriate answer. Their partner, however, can see a statement from which they have to make a yes/no question. For example, the statement: Yumiko studies English, should elicit the yes/no question: Does Yumiko study English? In the case of wh- questions, the information to be queried appears in red on the statement side of the card so, in the above example, if the word 'Yumiko ' is in red, the correct question would be: Who studies English. Likewise, if the word 'English ' is in red, the student should ask: What does Yumiko study? After participating in a demonstration of the activity, attendees will practice making their own questions and test the results.
