Gairaigo is Japanese for "loan word" or "borrowed word". For example, "conbini" is gairaigo for "convenience store." Is gairaigo a helpful and snappy tool for teaching analogous English terms, or is it a corrupting influence on learners' understanding and pronunciation of real English words? During the first hour, the two main speakers will discuss the results of a survey of the opinions of native English teachers about gairaigo, and they will examine the assumptions held therein.
During the second hour, everyone present is welcome to speak for a few minutes about effective teaching ideas.
