1:30 - 2:30 Nicky Sekino - Cure-All Pair Work
Cure-all pair work comes in three steps: first in 'sequencing activities' where students arrange scattered sentences in a logical manner; second, in pair work activities when students tear some parts of sentences and reproduce them; and the third step is a similar pair work but with a challenging twist. They are all fun and the students learn target sentences at their ease. Eye contact is secured, which is one problematic area in other pair work activities. The term 'cure-all' hints that students will learn in a self-learning atmosphere and the teacher will be relieved of having to pay total attention to the class, but will be able to observe the class and offer occasional language assistance. Cure-all pair work is applicable for all ages, textbooks, and classes with small or large numbers of students.
Nicky Sekino has taught English for the past 30 years at universities and private English schools. He is currently pursuing an MA at Teachers College Columbia University Tokyo campus.

2:45 - 4:45 pm Katie Marich - Reflecting On and Revising Our Classroom Projects
Projects can be fun for students and can incorporate and extend upon what the students have learned in the course so far. Projects, though, may involve some long term planning which can be overwhelming for the instructor. In this workshop, we will look at existing junior high school oral communication projects and discuss things such as making student groups, planning, adapting resources and materials for the level of the class, incorporating visual aids and, of course, assessment. By reflecting on and sharing ideas about projects that have been done, we can look to revise small things in our project procedures to improve the implementation of projects over time rather than scrapping ideas and continuously starting from scratch.
Catherine Marich is the head teacher of the Oral Communications Department at Senshu University Matsudo Junior High School in Chiba.
