1.30 - 2.30 pm Polina Mitkova - Teaching Listening to Young Learners Through Story Telling and Songs
One of the skills in EFL/ESL that needs special attention is listening. When it comes to listening young learners seem to outperform adults. However, if not consistently integrated in the curriculum, it can eventually lead to breakdowns in communication. In this workshop we will look into different activities that teachers can use in the classroom to teach listening in an amusing way, using authentic materials, songs and games that stimulate your students to listen for the sequence in a story line, recognizing phonetic vocabulary items and matching them to their visual representations.
Polina Mitkova is finishing her M. A. at Temple University Japan and has been teaching English to young learners in Europe and Japan for over 5 years.

2.45 - 4.45 pm Laura Blefgen-Togashi - The Truth About English Notebook
In April 2009, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology introduced its "English Notebook" to fifth and sixth grade students for use in Foreign Language Activity classes. The presenter, after having carefully examined, methodically designed and actually implemented two programs focused on "English Notebook" has discovered first-hand the truth about "English Notebook". In this presentation, both the strengths and weaknesses of using "English Notebook" will be discussed. How to conduct and improve upon specific lessons will also be demonstrated. This presentation is aimed at all individuals who are involved in public elementary school education and will be presented in both English and Japanese. If you have a copy of "English Notebook", please bring it with you.
Laura Blefgen-Togashi graduated from York University's Concurrent Education program in Toronto, Canada with degrees in Education and Psychology. She specialized in ESL and Special Education and taught for both the North York and Toronto Boards of Education. She has been teaching in Japan since 1988, and is the owner / head teacher of Canadian Conversation Club, a private English school in Kunitachi City, Tokyo. She is also currently working with several public elementary schools implementing programs in "Foreign Language Activity" classes. Canadian Conversation Club conducts teacher training workshops in both English and Japanese. Setsuko Terasaki graduated from Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College in Tokyo. She completed an intensive English Language course at the University of California in Davis. She was certified to teach English in elementary schools by the Labo International Exchange Foundation. Since 2000, she has been working for Canadian Conversation Club, and is currently involved in teacher training.
