Shadowing and other out-of-class listening assignments

Saturday, January 31st, 2009, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Nicholas Bovee and Jeff Stewart, Kyushu Sangyo University

Nagasaki JALT wishes you a Happy New Year, and best wishes for the Year of the Cow! For our first meeting of 2009, Nicholas Bovee and Jeff Stewart from Kyushu Sangyo University will visit us. Their first theme/topic of shadowing has become a popular activity for improving listening skills at Japanese tertiary institutions in recent years. The presenters will detail a pilot research report designed to determine how shadowing exercises affect student's pronunciation, as judged by impartial native speakers, and test scores.

The presenters will also detail other alternative methods for implementing out-of class listening assignments, including CALL resources. The latter will also feature some ideas for reading and vocabulary acquisition.

About the presenters: Jeff Stewart has taught ESL at a variety of schools and companies in Japan and Thailand since 2001, including Toshiba, Sanyo and Niigata University. He is currently a lecturer at Kyushu Sangyo University, and lives in Fukuoka. Nicholas Bovee has lived in Kyushu for nearly ten years. In addition to teaching, he has experience working as a Japanese-English translator. He currently teaches English at Kyushu Sangyo University, and is also involved with course development at Cyber University.

P.S. Please note that the annual Chinese New Year Lantern Festival awaits us all before, during and after the meeting: it runs this year from 1/26-2/9. All welcome!
