Effectively introducing cross-cultural communication into English language classrooms

Sunday, June 1st, 2008, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Jon Dujmovich

It is often said that English is an international language and students want to learn English to communicate with foreigners, but we provide very little cultural knowledge, motivation, or skills to communicate across cultures. Too often teachers' attempts to infuse 'culture' into their lessons amounts to learning festivals and flags, which is interesting, but serves little to develop the students real understanding of culture. When students are faced with real cross-cultural situations they remain silent and shy, or worse yet use inappropriate language or communication techniques. This workshop will provide numerous techniques and activities that teachers can immediately apply to their lessons. All activities are grounded in intercultural theory and methodology coupled with language learning pedagogy. Whether you teach large or small classes, children, teens, or adults, you will find this workshop a great benefit to your lesson planning and approach to teaching English. Learn to make your English class come alive by bringing culture in the classroom!
