Japanese and English expository writing have long been dichotomized. However, unlike in North America, no uniform writing instruction exists at any level in Japanese education, suggesting a complex reality. In order to clarify the implementation of and approaches towards university report tasks, a questionnaire was given to students. Results show a diversity of approaches, and perhaps a need for formal instruction.
