1:15 - 2:15 pm Marshel Copple: Using Katakana to Teach Accurate Pronunciation
Marshel will describe and then teach a modified type of katakana for recording English, intended to be taught to young learners who carry the tool into adulthood. Workshop attendees will try to learn the skills to write English accurately this way. Marshel will then compare the advantages and disadvantages of teaching with this modified katakana as opposed to several other methods including: no writing, English, (regular) katakana, and phonetics.

2:45 - 4:45 Naoko McLellan - Language Acquisition thru Stories and Picture Books
In this presentation, Naoko will share how the 4 skills of language acquisition can be guided using stories and picture books in the classroom in Junior High Schools with the understanding of the development of the learning process. It is said that listening and reading fluency is based on a positive attitude to not understanding everything, and the skill of searching for meaning, and predicting and guessing. Speaking and writing fluency is based on a positive attitude to �ghaving a go�h with the language one knows and not being afraid of making mistakes. Also, based on the skill of constructing meaning with limited language. (1995; Andrew Wright, Storytelling with Children). Stories as holistic approaches to language learning will expand or branch into many different directions, allowing students to pursue personal interest through foreign language. Comprehension, vocabulary development, structural analysis, phonics, recording information and many other activities will be introduced through directed mini lessons with small groups or individual students, or as independent practice in class or at home.

This ETJ Tokyo workshop is open to members only. However, you may join ETJ on the day. Membership is free.
