It would definitely be wrong to delude learners into thinking that they already know enough English and that their only problem is shyness, so as to (on the pretext of so-called communicative activities) engage them in mere chit-chat using their meager stock of chunky conversational phrases. Oral Interpretation, though it is originally "the art of communicating to an audience a piece of written work in its intellectual, emotional, and esthetic entirety" (Charlotte Lee), is actually a powerful means of language input. It enhances the learner's sensitivity toward a silent text through an analysis not only of its meaning, but more importantly of its voice and intentions. As the essential rhetoric of language is absorbed in a holistic way, it will become evident in the learner's spontaneous spoken and written utterances.
