Using Poetry in the Language Classroom: Whys and Hows

In this presentation, Hugh Nicoll will begin with a brief exploration of reasons why we might use poetry in language classrooms. He will devote most our time together to a demonstration of ways he has used poems in his classes in discussion with participants. He will also share a list of poetry resources on the web, along with a brief discussion of how an arts education perspective on language may help teachers and learners become more autonomous members of their shared learning communities.
Hugh Nicoll has been teaching in Japan for 23 years, and is currently professor of English at Miyazaki Municipal University. He is active in the Learner Development SIG, and in the Learner Autonomy SIG (IATEFL).
