The Many Uses of Journal Writing

In this seminar we will explore the many ways that L2 journal writing can be used in different kinds and levels of classes to achieve different purposes. We will first experiment with several definitions of journal writing, and then discuss a fundamental introductory question about what the underlying assumptions are about why teachers might ask their students to write journals. These assumptions will include theoretical, pedagogical, and (inter)personal aspects. The first part of the seminar will conclude with considerations of the effects of journal writing from two perspectives: results reported in some of the published literature on journal writing and results reported from the group on their own experiences with journal writing.
