TPR-S (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling)

Sunday, September 24th, 2006, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Melinda Kawahara

TPR-S (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) is a relatively new teaching method based on the natural teaching approach. It was created by Blaine Ray in the 1990's and now thousands of teachers all over the world are trying this powerful teaching method. For the first half of this workshop the presenter will explain how and why the method works. The three steps for TPR-S will be taught and participants will be given a chance to practice the first step in small groups. For the second half of the workshop participants will experience firsthand how students feel when learning a second language for the first time.

Melinda Kawahara is an 18 year English instructor veteran. For the past four years she has extensively studied and researched the TPR-S method in Japan and The United States. She is the owner of Lindy Lizard's English House where all lessons are based on the TPR-S method. She writes her own storybooks and gives workshops on how to incorporate storytelling into the English classroom.

* Please note that part of this presentation will be in a third language to help participants gain an insight to the potential of this method.
