HomePromoting Strategic Reading in College EFL

College EFL students often lack systematic strategies for processing complex informational texts. This presentation will demonstrate several reading-to-learn strategies, including K-W-L (Know-Want-Learn) and construction of graphic organizers, which prompt students to approach a text purposefully, to read it strategically, and to consolidate and reflect on what they learn from it. Post-reading activities consistent with a reading-to-learn approach will also be demonstrated and brainstormed: follow-up vocabulary study, independent reading, and extending activities for building oral communication and writing skills. Audience participation will be solicited!
Biography: Professor May Shih teaches at San Francisco State University, where she is M.A. TESOL Program Coordinator. Her special interests are research, methods, and materials for developing ESL/EFL learners' reading, writing, and grammar editing skills. She has published articles on these topics in TESOL Quarterly, TESOL Journal, and College ESL. As an American-born Chinese, she has a special interest in English teaching in China and in methods for developing learners' communicative competence in EFL settings. She has lectured at universities throughout China.
