Speaker: Dr. Fred Genesee, McGill University
In this workshop, we will briefly examine student outcomes in immersion, with a focus on second language achievement and factors that influence second language achievement. The workshop will focus on (1) strategies for planning instruction to ensure that language and content learning are integrated; (2) ways of thinking about language when planning for integrated instruction; and (3) explicit focus on linguistic form (including error correction) to promote second language learning in immersion. Participants will be given opportunities to apply what they are learning to an instructional unit from their own classrooms. Elementary and Secondary Level.
Professor Genesee has conducted extensive research on alternative forms of bilingual education for majority and minority language students, including immersion programs. He authored numerous articles and books on bilingualism and bilingual education.
