News in the Classroom: Reading Activities with the Asahi Weekly

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005, 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Speaker: Barry Keith

Students enjoy reading English newspapers because they are authentic, current and cover a broad range of topics. For the same reasons, however, newspapers can be difficult for teachers to use effectively. This presentation introduces a curriculum for using the Asahi Weekly in the university classroom. The audience will have the opportunity to experience several activities that promote reading and critical thinking skills. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using newspapers in the classroom will follow.
