Learning English, like all learning, requires predicting much, much more than it requires memorization of sentences, explanations or definitions in either our first or second language. No matter how much we are able to memorize, we will constantly encounter new and original messages that have not been defined or explained. Though there is much diversity in any class, there is also a great deal that all learners have in common. In the presentation, Fanselow invites participants to perform some tasks which show ways to overcome diversity of learning styles and backgrounds. All people make predictions in other areas of life, such as deciding when a liquid is too hot, as well as discovering which buttons to touch on a VCR or a mobile phone.
