With the apparent rise in usage of English loanwords in speech among Japanese young people, it may be said that there is a lessening of the linguistic distance between the two languages. However, there has been some debate regarding the degree to which loanwords may be purposefully employed in lesson design as well as the overall role of loanwords in EFL instruction. The presenters will outline the debate on the topic through a review of the literature, and will summarize the results of their recent research. Lastly, the presenters will outline specific learning tasks that utilize loan words and English cognates effectively.
