Affective Processes in Second Language Learning

The study of the affective reactions of language students has produced a substantial body of research and a great deal of interest in recent years. Variables such as motivation, attitudes, anxiety, and willingness to communicate have been shown to be influential in the language learning process. Our focus will be on classic and recent studies in each of these areas with the goal of placing affective reactions in the larger context of the learner and social situation, especially the language classroom.

As the seminar proceeds, we will review and critique several theoretical models and pertinent methodological issues. We will focus on four models in particular, though we will also review work by other authors. First, Gardner's influential Socio-Educational Model will be examined. Particular emphasis will be given to criticisms of the model in an effort to separate well-founded analysis from that which misses the mark. A second model, Clent's social psychological model, will be examined with a focus on the case of a minority group learning the language of a majority group, with special consideration given to English as an international language. In discussing the third model, Donyei's process approach, we will address motivation for specific language learning tasks. Finally, we will discuss a model of Willingness to Communicate, with a focus on immediate influences on specific instances of second language communication. By the end of the seminar, participants will have evaluated several of the most active streams of research in the field of second language learning.

This seminar is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public.
