Viva! Japanese Teachers of English!

Speaker: Michiko Sugita

Michiko Sugita's talk today has two themes: Monolingual classes vs Multilingual classes, and Native speaker teachers vs Non-native speaker teachers. As a Japanese teacher of English for a high school, Sugita has come to the conclusion that Japanese teachers of English (JTEs) are better at managing English classes in high school. The classroom in Japan is quite unique, given that JTEs have monolingual classes and a large class size, as well as the fact that that JTEs spend most of the time being together with their own students as homeroom teachers. Sugita videotaped some classes to show as a starter to today's speech. Sugita will also talk about her day-to-day work, analyze some classes of hers and of other teachers, and then she'll discuss her goals as a teacher.
