University teachers in Japan sometimes feel frustrated as to why their students do not take their studies more seriously and instead focus mainly on their interests, friends, and part-time jobs. About 800 students from two different universities responded to a variety of questions and the results reveal that students have different values and perception of university life in comparison with teachers. The gap may look wide, but a closer look at the society and its expectation of university education tells us that our students may not be far from what they are supposed to be doing. However, as teachers it may be helpful to know more about the students we are teaching, since a better understanding of the situation can result in adjusted expectations and better communication.
