Using Storybooks to Teach Children

Storybooks offer one of the best resources available for young learners. They provide an instant link between teacher and student. Repeating themes and patterns offer ready-made language review and recycling. Pictures provide language support and a platform for student-teacher interaction outside the storyline. They engage the imagination and the emotions as few other materials can. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to a variety of storybooks and explore a range of options for using them in the English classroom. Everyone will have a chance to develop and share their own teaching ideas using the books provided. Stan Pederson has been working with elementary school children for over ten years in Chiyoda-ku. He has developed a complete multi-media program of original activities: songs, chants, games and storybooks for grades one to six published under the title of English Stadium (Benesse Corporation). He has the received the John Fanselow Award for innovation and leadership in language teaching and is in constant demand for teacher training workshops.
