Workshop on World Englishes in the Classroom
Sunday, December 7th, 2003, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Speaker: Braj B. Kachru (University of Illinois), Paroo Nihalani (University of Brunei), Yamuna Kachru (University of Illinois), more
The concept of World Englishes has been growing, largely thanks to the work of Doctor Braj B. Kachru, professor emeritus of the University of Illinois, who is known for conceiving of the 'three circles of English' design, in which the 'inner circle' represents the traditional countries where English is spoken as a native language, the 'outer' or 'extended' circle where English has some official role and is spoken as a common second language, and the 'outer' or 'expanding' circle representing countries where English serves primarily an international--as opposed to intranational--role. World Englishes recognizes the development and legitimacy of many new standardized or 'standardizing' varieties of English, and emphasizes the 'WE' rather than 'us versus them' attitude toward the ownership of English. Chukyo University's Department of World Englishes is hosting this workshop as an opportunity for academics and teachers in Japan to see the relevance of World Englishes to the language classroom in Japan.
