Haiku Composed in English as a Japanese Language

Sunday, October 12th, 2003, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Speaker: David McMurray, The International University of Kagoshima

This poetry lecture and workshop by David McMurray about composing haiku in English is part of Kitakyushu City's annual international week. English is a foreign language in Japan. English is an international language and as it develops into a language of common use in Japan, English may become a second language here. Participants in this event will have a chance to create their own haiku. McMurray is the haiku selector for Asahi Haikuist Network, a weekly column of haiku and notes that appears in the International Herald Tribune Asahi Shimbun, the Asahi Japan distributed from New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, as well as on the internet at www.asahi.com/english/haiku.
