Current Trends in Teaching Vocabulary

Speaker: Paul Nation (Victoria University, New Zealand)

The seminar will look at the teaching and learning of vocabulary including recent research on technical vocabulary and idioms. The focus will be on how teachers can develop a well-balanced vocabulary program and the principles that should lie behind such a program. Special attention will be given to the teaching of vocabulary strategies and vocabulary learning through speaking and reading. Seminar topics will include

• learning vocabulary through communicative tasks,
• reading and vocabulary development,
• vocabulary frequency and teaching approaches,
• diagnosing learners’ vocabulary levels,
• planning a vocabulary course (the four strands),
• vocabulary for special purposes,
• using words cards, and
• guessing from contexts.

This seminar is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public.
