Cooperative Learning in the Foreign Language Classroom

Over the past twenty years, second language education has seen increased use of group activities. This increase stems from a variety of sources, including Communicative Language Teaching, the Output Hypothesis, the Interactionist Hypothesis, Sociocultural Theory, Student-Centered Instruction, and the integration of Global Issues. Cooperative learning (CL), also known as collaborative learning, represents a diverse and growing body of theory, research, and practice that help educators maximize the benefits of group activities.
This seminar on Cooperative Learning will provide participants with background on CL from the general education and second language education literatures. Principles of CL will be explored, and a wide variety of CL techniques will be demonstrated. The seminar will attempt to teach CL via CL: participants will learn about Cooperative Learning by taking part in Cooperative Learning activities. We will also discuss many of the specific details of CL: what to do, for example, when students use their L1 in their Cooperative Learning groups.

This seminar is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public.
