Speaker: Gary Baird, Makiko Kanno, Matthew Vatta, Masaki Nogami and Tamara Milbourn
Five local teachers will present successful classroom activities. Gary Baird, who works at various elementary schools in Imabari, will describe some techniques and activities that can be used in the elementary school classroom to facilitate effective language acquisition. Makiko Kanno, a Japanese language instructor at the International Student Center at Ehime University, will show that by using a lot of realia and pictures, it is easy and effective to conduct a class in the target language only, even for beginners. Matthew Vatta from Ehime University will introduce a vocabulary-building activity for pre-intermediate learners about the smells, sights and tastes of food through hands-on samples. Masaki Nogami from Seiryo High School will present some suggestions for lessons for high school students, including activities on slash-reading and shadow-reading. And Tamara Milbourn from Matsuyama University will explain how she uses collages to encourage her pre-intermediate students to practice using different conversation strategies.
