One of the most reliable predictors of literacy accomplishments, at least for English speakers, is language skill, both vocabulary and the achievement of extended discourse skills. Findings will be presented from a longitudinal study of low-income children, tracing the impact of mother-child interaction in the preschool period on children's language development, and ultimately their literacy outcomes as 12-14 year olds. Relationships between language predictors and literacy outcomes become stronger as the literacy challenges center themselves more in comprehension and less in word reading.
