Storytelling in the ESL classroom

(Second of three presentations today) While textbooks and other classroom activities play an important role in language teaching, the language presented is often contrived since its primary purpose is learning the language function or grammar point being presented, not communication. I have found storytelling to be an effective method to present and elicit natural and less contrived language in the ESL class. We tell stories solely because we want to inform or entertain our audience. Successful language learning can also be as much a matter of unconscious acquisition than conscious language learning. I would like to present some storytelling activities and exercises I have used in conversation and writing classes at Japanese colleges.
