Teaching Balanced Literacy

What is balanced literacy? A framework for reading and writing to, with, and by students within a literacy block of 2-3 hours daily. Guided reading is the core of the program. This presentation will introduce guided reading and how to use picture books in the daily curriculum .The presenter will demonstrate methods of prediction, observation, and critical thinking using illustrations from picture books. The audience will have an opportunity to explore and develop their own idea of balanced literacy. About the speaker: Sumiko Leeper received a BS degree from Seijo University, Liberal Arts, Japanese Literature, Tokyo and an MS from Iowa State University in Journalism. She then took the library courses from the University of New Mexico to be a school librarian and received a teaching certificate from the state of New Mexico.
