English as an International Language

Monday, July 7th, 2003, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Speaker: Jennifer Jenkins, King's College, University College London

Oxford University Press and The British Council are proud to sponsor this series of biannual talks by distinguished scholars, on areas of interest to language teachers in Japan. This summer's program features presentations in seven cities by Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, Professor of English, King's College, University College London. She teaches Sociolinguistics and Phonology/Phonetics courses on the MA in English Language Teaching & Applied Linguistics, of which she is Programme Director. Her book, The Phonology of English as an International Language, reflects her main research interest in recent developments in World Englishes in general and English as an International Language in particular, in terms of both their description and their implications for teaching and learning English as a second language. The topic of this presentation is English as an International Language . During the past thirty years, the English language has spread around the globe in a manner unprecedented for any language. The result is that its most frequent use nowadays is not for communication among its native speakers (English as a Native Language), or even for communication between its native and non-native speakers (English as a Foreign Language), but as an international language: a lingua franca used between its non-native speakers who do not share the same first language. This presentation will look at the ways in which English as an International Language(EIL) differs from traditional English as a Foreign Language, and the implications for the teaching of pronunciation and lexicogrammar. Examples of teaching materials which have been adapted for EIL classrooms will be presented.
