Listening in Language Learning

Saturday, June 21st, 2003, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Michael Rost, University of California, Berkeley

Listening is both the underlying skill in oral communication and the pivotal process in language acquisition. This seminar will explore ways of understanding listening as a skill and as a language acquisition process so that teachers can enhance their teaching of oral language and facilitate their students’ long-term learning. This seminar by Dr. Michael Rost will be divided into segments focusing on attention and memory; phonology and aural perception; word recognition, comprehension and inferencing; pragmatics and interpretation; roles and strategies. In each segment, we will perform small group tasks to explore the basic psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic concepts involved in listening, investigate how L1 and L2 listening process overlap and differ, and identify intervention points for teaching.
Some of the specific teaching areas that will be covered are listening in interaction, input enhancement and grading, task design, strategy training, self-access learning, uses of multimedia (audio, video, and internet) resources, integrating listening and speaking activities, and assessment. Projects for the seminar can focus either on the teaching of listening or research on underlying processes in L2 listening.
This seminar is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public.
