A Holistic Approach to English Conversation

Sunday, April 29th, 2001, 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Speaker: Paul Shimizu, co-author of Marathon Mouth and Marathon Mouth Plus (Intercom Press)

Most students of English are exposed to it in a variety of ways. Quite often their second/foreign language aquisition splits the English language into a variety of disciplines, e.g. writing, grammar, translation, reading, listening, and speaking.
This workshop introduces a more holistic approach to foreign language acquisition with the emphasis on conversational. The methodologies in the workshop are aimed at students in large class setting, although students generally will spend their time in small groups, teacher centred activities, and whole class activities. There is also a great emphasis on cooperative learning.
The presenter will use a variety of activities to illustrate the methodology and usage of information gaps, listening with peer review, surveys and "Find someone who" types of activities. He will also show how to challenge students by not spoon-feeding them the language they will use.
