HomeLanguage Status in New Zealand: Some Educational Implications

Dr. Roger Barnard's appearance is being generously supported by Junshin Catholic University of Nagasaki. His last appearance in this city was in January of last year when he spoke about Vygotsky and SFL, and this month's session will certainly be interesting once again. This time, the purpose of this presentation is to explain the linguistic and cultural diversity in New Zealand and discuss how the status of the different languages affects educational provision. It will begin with an overview of the languages in New Zealand and will make a brief comparison with the linguistic context in Japan. It will then address a number of educational questions concerning the use of English and Maori as the media of instruction, the educational situation of other community languages, and foreign language learning and teaching. All are welcome, and we suggest that you combine our meeting with a visit to the annual Tall Ships Festival held at the same time here in Nagasaki.
