Meaningful student conversations in the high school classroom

Sunday, January 19th, 2003, 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Speaker: Simon Evans, International Christian University

Few high school students in Japan ever take part in extended meaningful personal discourse in the classroom. Generally speaking, students are over-reliant on textbooks and teachers. Indeed, commercially available materials rarely allow students to pursue their own line of questioning which reflect their own interests. The primary focus of this workshop will be to demonstrate that students can initiate and sustain such discourse independent of teacher or textbook support. To achieve this, students need to be able to: ask and answer meaningful question and to develop themes. A secondary focus will be on accuracy of form, and student error correction. This hands-on workshop will give participants a chance to produce their own materials for these kinds of activities.
