Speaker: Senator Nancy Kassebaum Baker

From raising 4 children on a farm in Kansas to serving three terms in the U.S. Senate to representing the U.S. with her husband Ambassador to Japan, Howard Baker, Nancy Kassebaum Baker knows what the "The Challenge of Change" is about. She represented her home state of Kansas in the U.S. Senate from 1979 - 1997. During her tenure, she chaired the Labor and Human Resources Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee's Subcommittee on African Affairs, and the Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Aviation. After leaving the US Senate, and prior to coming to Japan, Senator Kassebaum Baker served on the Board of Trustees for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Kaiser Family Foundation. She was Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the George C. Marshall Foundation and the American-Turkish Council. Senator Kassebaum Baker was also on the Board of Directors of the National Committee on US-China Relations, the African Law Institute Council-ABA, the International Medical Corps and Handgun Control. Ever since being in Japan Mrs. Kassebaum Baker plays an extremely active role in support of U.S.- Japanese relations.
